Happy Earth Day!

As 2009 kicked off – I made a pact that I would become “Greener”! I can’t believe how much less garbage we have. I only have to wheel our Garbage Can to the curb every couple weeks!!

John is slowly adjusting to all of my boxes that sort my paper, plastic, cans, etc. Since he’s from Texas, where very little recycling is done, I will give him a bit of time to adjust! It didn’t take him long to catch onto returning our bottles and cans to collect our deposit money – because he wanted to get back what he already paid for originally. However, the more I drip the green spirit on him, I know he’ll catch on to recycling and reusing other items ;) I love picking out the garbage he puts in the can under the sink in the kitchen and putting into the recycle box behind the garbage!! I don’t say anything, but actions often speak louder than words.

I also hope to plant a small herb garden and more flowers this year in our yard! I know – crazy to think that I might attempt to keep vegetation alive – however I’m working on mastering the skill – I’m currently a Domestic Goddess in Training!

What are YOU doing to live a Greener life – other than just celebrate Earth Day??  I’d love to hear YOUR tips on how I can incorporate more Greener practices into my life!  Please share what you do…

  1. Happy Earth Day!! A couple things I do to be “greener” are maybe fairly obvious, but I always do laundry in cold water and hang about 80% of it to dry instead of running the dryer! Another thing I like to do is use tupperware (or Glad or Ziploc, etc) containers for items in my lunch since I have to take my lunch to work everyday…& I have a lunch kit instead of using plasitc bags! They are just small things but they make me feel like I’m making a difference – every little bit goes a long way! I also like to use those cloth bags for grocery shopping!

  2. Way to go! I’m also working on encouraging my honey to be greener. You are doing a wonderful job with decreasing your garbage!
    Some things Grandma taught me:
    – Save food bags from grocery shopping to use for storage and covers later (produce, bulk and bread bags)
    – She also washes and reuses bags and foil, but I’m not so keen on that…
    – Always take your own bags to the store
    – Rather than buying Tupperware, we use sour cream, yogurt, ice cream, etc. containers for food storage
    – Look for items that use less packaging and are local/Canadian produced
    – Not sure if there is a site for Lethbridge, but there is one for Edmonton listing local food, drink and shopping options
    – It’s hard, but driving slower makes such a big difference on fuel consumption (I’m working on this…)

  3. AMAZING tips Laura!! Thanks for sharing sweetie! I really appreciate your fabulous suggestions – we have so much knowledge to gain from our grandparents. What a blessing that you can learn first hand from your Grandma!
