98 cents plus tax

I went to the post office today to mail a package and bought a book of Canadian and United States stamps too. I like to have them on hand – when I send out my “just because” / random / birthday / and soon to be Christmas cards!

I waited in line for about 15 minutes - as there were quite a few people ahead of me. I waited patiently and after my turn, the line was twice as long as it was when I started to wait!

As I passed the last 2 people in line and headed out, I overheard a “more experienced” gentleman sweetly tell a woman,

“All I’m waiting for is to get Yankee stamp, to send this to my Yankee daughter!”

I giggled (inside) and quickly reflected on my time living in the United States. My mother was so awesome and sent me SO much snail mail. I’m sure that she phoned, mailed me, AND emailed me something everyday for the first 30 days after I packed up and left the country at 18. She backed off from daily communication after that – but still to this day stays consistent with unique messages. Love ya Mom! Now you all know where I get it from – but have a long way to keep up with her kindness.

I quickly turned around and excused myself for interrupting. I said, “I have a US stamp!”

Before the man could respond I was reaching for the booklet in my purse. I pulled it off and handed it to him. In shock – he said “how much are they?”

Stamps

He repeated himself, “Thanks, how much do I owe you?”

I smiled and expressed – “Nothing! Please pay it forward.”

The man responded, ”I do everyday, doing everything I can for others. I learned that from my Mother.”

I smiled and replied, “Have an amazing day!”

As I left, I heard the lady he was previously talking to comment, “The Christmas spirit has started early.”

Oh honey, I thought, you’re mistaken! I definitely don’t just give random acts of kindness, just around the festive season.

I do it ALL year long - no special occasion necessary. I trust you do the same!

Mysterious Ways

Do you ever get the inclination that you should do something and you have no idea why?

Well…I get them all the time and love acting on them. Remember that everything happens for a reason.

I live my life serving God. Everything I do is for him and everything I have is to serve him with. I trust that you have someone with you also – taking every step through life together.

This morning on my way to work, a wonderful friend popped into my mind and I had no idea why. I knew I needed to contact her.

I sent a simple text message:

TextSent

I got a tear in my eye when I received her response:

ReplyText

I sent my text message to make my friend smile, not so that I’d cry from her unbelievable reply. Live life sharing positive energy – for no other reason than to serve a higher purpose in life. I’m so lucky to have friends that are walking the same path as me as a Christian.

One of my other beautiful friends shared the following thought with her network on Facebook last week, as her status update. I thought it was so gorgeous and perfect for sharing to support this example of God’s work. Thanks for empowering me Kattie.

“Smile…you never know who is being reminded that there is hope because of something so small. You are a gift that God has made, live everyday with purpose and intention!” Kattie

Berry Picking

Last Sunday, we went on a romantic drive west of my parents. We made a scenic tour in the foothills by Sundre, AB and got Ice Cream from a quaint little shop. The best part – John surprised the nice “experienced” couple in line behind us and paid for theirs ;) I love paying it forward!

Then we made a fun stop at my Uncle and Tante’s (French for Aunt!) for out of the blue. Our astonishing visit was welcomed with a pail and a promise for a brewski (Canadian slang for beer!) after a little work. My outdoorsy Uncle is famous for picking and growing fruits and vegetables.

The mission was to pick Saskatoon’s my grandparents. Unfortunately, my Grandma (my Uncle’s sister) hasn’t been well as a result of treatments she’s going through. So this kind gesture that was initiated by my Uncle to brighten her day. Everything happens for a reason – so John & I arrived on a perfect day to help with the harvest and deliver the fruit my Grandma loves.

This experience was also a “first” for my Texan! Thank goodness he’s an Eagle Scout and is prepared for everything – his long windpants provided the protection he needed to avoid getting the itch from the needle weed.

Ready Pickin

It was a perfect way to wrap up a Sunday afternoon.

Baa Ram Ewe

I should have bought a sheep yesterday at the 4H sale. It’s been a wild week and our lawn didn’t get the attention that it usually does. From the house & deck the grass in the backyard didn’t look this bad! Then I got the lawn mower out and it almost got lost in the pasture, I mean lawn!

I thought about leaving it until John came home later this week. My fantastic fast talking Auctioneer flew to Vancouver Island this morning for a sale. I was very envious when he sent me the view from his balcony! I am imagining the sound he is hearing as he goes to sleep…

Back to my exciting afternoon. I wonder how tall the field would have been when he returned to mow? My amazing husband used to own a landscaping business. He is very particular about how the grass is cut. Straight lines and precision are expected. Every time the lawn is mowed, we do it a different direction to avoid having the same lines.

Well, since I let the backyard get out of hand, I had to dump out the bag every couple passes!

2-passes   mowed

House Rule: Mmm…John’s rule, the lawn mower must be washed off after every use. I appreciate that our belongings are taken care of, kept clean, and able to hold their value. The picture of under the mower is taken “BEFORE”!

I had an interesting realization this afternoon. I was mowing our front lawn and a couple unfamiliar ladies rode their bikes past. I said “Hi” and they stopped to ask me a question. One lady made a unique comment about the fact that I was “mowing more than just our own lawn”. I replied “Yes, our neighbors and us take turns mowing. In the winter we also shovel each others walks quite often”. This lady was shocked! You may be also, but we are used to it. John and I don’t see much point in mowing half of the lawn. Our yard looks beautiful when its all groomed at the same time.

Since we travel quite a bit, we love knowing that if we’re gone – that our lawn in the summer or sidewalk and drive in the winter is taken care of. Our neighbors are gone lots also, so we just Pay It Forward.

I dare you to surprise someone in your life – with a kind gesture. It’s so nice waking up to the snow removed in the winter or a beautiful yard to drive up to.

I’m off to get clean.

Cheers, Miss Green – I’m absolutely covered.

1: Pay It Forward

I’m SO excited to share this beautiful Pay It Forward story with you.

Three months ago, I posted the Texas Bound Giveaway entry, followed by the Twist that outlined the goal of the Living An Amazing Life, 1st Pay It Forward challenge.

Here is our 1st winner, Shelagh’s, heart filled act of kindness:

“I held on to the gift card because I knew I was going to the Children’s Hospital. My kids go for the odd appointment at the eye clinic & sometimes day surgery for dental work…nothing serious. But the parents with seriously ill children, kill me every time I walk through that lobby. I can only imagine how difficult their lives are, pouring everything they have into those kids. I got on the elevator and some young parents got on behind me with a little one in the stroller; she had feeding tubes & no hair; I can only guess some kind of cancer. I knew this was it; these were my people to ‘pay it forward’. I told them that I’d won a Starbucks gift card and that part of the deal was to ‘pay it forward’. I told them I know it must be difficult to get away from the hospital, but if you can, please go have a break & know that I wish your family the best. They were stunned and thankful & I was glad my floor came up as the tears began to well up.”

shelaghblatz

Thank you Shelagh for sharing your love and kind gesture, it brought me to to tears. Your story also filled me up with joy, we’re so lucky to have amazing individuals like you in this world. I’m honored to have you as a friend.

Shelagh and I met last fall, when she exhibited in Copper West. She is a savvy business woman, with her silversmithing business Designs by Shelagh. She makes absolutely stunning jewelry – I love my turquoise necklace. She is also a dynamic mother of 4, and wife of a rancher and outrider for the WPCA. I encourage you to visit her website Designs by Shelagh and follow her on Twitter.

Keep Paying It Forward in your life, it will always come back to you ten fold when you least expect it.
